In Papring Hamlet, most of the local community is involved in the utilization of bamboo, which is processed into economically valuable crafts such as woven bamboo crafts, bamboo bags, bamboo lampshades, and bamboo building construction. In addition, there are also bamboo craftsmen and local MSME products involving the Papring women's group. They focus on economic activities such as making orders for bamboo crafts, batik, and local snacks.
This is a picture of the situation when looking at the high demand of the community forbamboo utilization. Therefore, Environmental Bamboo Foundation (YBLL) collaborated with PT. Pertamina (Persero) and Kampoeng Batara through the Bamboo Preservation Field School Program, Sustainable Bamboo Harvesting, and Strengthening Local Craftsmen's Skills, held at the Bamboo House in Kampoeng Batara, Papring Neighborhood, Kalipuro Village, Kalipuro District, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java. The program was guided by bamboo craft industry experts, Iskandar from Mojokerto and Sahlan Junaedy, the YBLL East Java Coordinator, on December 3-4, 2025.
On the first day of this activity, a field school on sustainable harvesting was held, involving 20 participants from the local community, local residents, and Kampoeng Batara. During the series of activities, participants learned together and practiced field techniques for harvesting, cutting bamboo stalks, determining the age of bamboo ready for harvesting, the bamboo harvesting season calendar, the properties of bamboo, landscape models for bamboo cultivation for intercropping with food crops, and agroecology-based bamboo cultivation models, as well as joint discussions on strengthening the skills of local craftsmen in selecting craft materials and bamboo construction materials for sustainable harvesting. On the second day, participants learned about bamboo preservation techniques using a model of boiling with a mixture of urea fertilizer and insecticide.
“They were also very enthusiastic to learn together about sustainable bamboo harvesting and preservation. Hopefully, we can play our role to the fullest as supporters. Through this field school, we hope to facilitate the participants,” said Meyco Danu Pradana (Danu), Banyuwangi Village Facilitator.
The Bamboo Preservation Field School, Sustainable Bamboo Harvesting, and Strengthening Local Craftsmen Skills are in line with YBLL's grand vision to facilitate and encourage sustainable programs to provide knowledge related to bamboo preservation and sustainable harvesting to local communities.
